Howard B. Boston, 72, Nevada, died May 13, 1994 at the Veteran Medical Center in Des Moines. Mass of Christian burial was held today at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Nevada. A vigil service was held Sunday. The body was donated to the University of Iowa Medical School. Cooper-Ryan Funeral Home of Nevada was in charge of arrangements.
Howard B. Boston, son of Walter and Margaret (Welty) Boston, was born Feb. 6, 1922 in Williams. On Aug. 15, 1939, he married Ardys Hupp in Webster City. He was a major in the U.S. Army Artillery. In 1944, he was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge and received the Purple heart. On July 11, 1959, he was the first American Serviceman to be wounded in Vietnam. He was professor of military science and tactics at Loras Academy in Dubuque and a military advisory in Vietnam. He retired in 1964. The couple had resided in Nevada since 1970, moving there from Mason City.
He is survived by his wife, Ardys, son, Robert Boston of Ames; daughters, Rita Abbott of Des Moines, Mary Beth Boston of Phoenix, Ariz., Carolyn Boston of Glendale, Ariz. and Frances Armstrong of Edgewood, Md.; sisters, Mary Bobzei [Bobzien] of Kansas City, Mo., Margaret Schumacher of Clarion, Monica Page of Iowa Falls, Loretta Cherpenski of Fort Myers Beach, Fla., Rosina Holtz of Greene; 12 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial may be made to St. Patrick's Building Fund.
