Scott Manly Kalvig, 79, died August 31, at the Veterans Hospital in Des Moines. He suffered a severe stroke July 1. Funeral services were held Wednesday, Sept. 4 at Hamilton's Funeral Home with military graveside rites at the Highland Memory Gardens, with Pastor James Holmes officiating.
Scott Manly Kalvig was born to Engle and Anna Urin Kalvig March 25, 1912, at Ellsworth. He attended school in Ellsworth and also at Thompson, Ia. He was baptized and confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Ellsworth. At an early age, he started helping his father dig tile ditch and he worked for many area farmers.
On Nov. 13, 1943, he married Josephine Wright at Webster City. He entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and became trained as a baker, a profession he continued until retirement working 30 years at the Colonial Bakery in Des Moines. He was a member of the American Legion and the Baker and Confectionary Union Local No. 34.
He is survived by his wife, Josephine, a niece, Janet Peterson and Husband Matt of Ankeny, and many friends.
Scott was preceded in death by an infant son, his parents, one brother, Otto and one sister, Evelyn Lang.
