Dennis E. VanDePol, 55, longtime Stanhope resident and mayor-elect, died early Sunday morning at the Hamilton County hospital following a sudden illness.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Grace United Methodist church in Stanhope with the Rev. William Van Dam officiating and with burial in the Lawn Hill cemetery east of Stanhope.

Flagfolding services will be held at graveside by the American Legion Post 191 of Webster City. Friends may call at the Foster Funeral home until 9 a.m. Wednesday at which time the casket will be taken to the church.

Dennis Erwin VanDePol, son of Harry and Alice Byers VanDePol, was born Aug. 26, 1928 at Kirkville, Iowa. He received his education in the Ottumwa area. During World War II he served with the U.S. armed services in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska and the Pentagon.

On May 17, 1947, he was married to Darlene Maifeld and for several years he worked for the Hove Truck Lines at Stanhope. For the past 10 years he had driven for the Space Carriers of Minneapolis-St. Paul.

He is survived by his wife, five sons and three daughters, Keith of Nevada, Mrs. Duane (Carol) Range of Kamrar, Thomas of Stanhope, Gary of Fort Dodge, Robert of Boone, Janelle Feaker of Ames, Dennis of Stanhope and Deanne, living at home; 10 grandchildren; two brothers and one step-sister, Darrell VanDePol of Des Moines, Dale VanDePol of Phoenix, Ariz., and Mrs. Marjorie Everts of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; and his step-mother, Vera VanDePol of Marshalltown.

He was preceded in death by both parents and one brother.

He was a member of Grace United Methodist church of Stanhope and the Webster City Moose Lodge.
