Kamrar Girl Killed in Highway Accident

Miss Paxton, 18, Dies in Crash South of Ames

Barbara Paxton, 18-year old Kamrar girl, was instantly killed early this morning in a two-car collision on rain-swept Highway 69 about four miles south of Ames.

Two other Kamrar young people, Gary Arends, 23, and Sharon Mollison, 17, were severely injured in the accident in which two Huxley residents were also hurt. All four injured persons were taken to Mary Greeley hospital for treatment.

Miss Paxton, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Paxton, who farm near Kamrar, was tossed out of the car which Arends was driving and which apparently skidded out of control into the path of an auto in which Obed Johnson, 56, and his son, Duane, 23, were riding. The accident occurred at about 6:40 this morning.

Officers at the scene said it was not immediately learned who was driving the Johnson car. They said that it appeared as if Arends' vehicle had skidded on the rain-covered highway while attempting to pass another car as the young people were heading south toward Des Moines.

Miss Paxton who was valedictorian of the class of 1959 at Kamrar high school was enrolled as a student at A.I.B. Business college in Des Moines and Arends, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Jans Arends, was also a student at the college this summer. Miss Mollison, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Elmo Mollison, was graduated with the class of 1960 at Kamrar and had reportedly accepted a job in Des Moines where she was to have started work this morning.

Funeral services for Miss Paxton are pending, and arrangements will be announced Tuesday.

Surviving are her parents; one brother, Ronald, and one sister, Sylvia.

Also surviving are her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Paxton of Batavia, Iowa, and Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Welch of Fairfield.
