W.C. man dies in Webster Co. crash

Kenneth Steven McConnell, 29, Webster City, was killed in a one-vehicle accident four miles southwest of Stratford Wednesday. The accident was reported at 6:00 p.m.

McConnell suffered internal injuries after the pickup he was driving rolled into a ditch. The vehicle landed upside down, pinning McConnell inside. McConnell, alone in the pickup, was pronounced dead at Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge. He was taken there by the Stratford rescue unit.

McConnell was reportedly headed east on an unnumbered county blacktop and went out of control on a curve. Damage to the pickup was estimated at $1,500.

The accident was investigated by the Iowa Highway Patrol and deputies from the Wright County Sheriff's office.

The death was the eighth traffic fatality this year in Webster county, officials said today.

Funeral services for Kenneth S. McConnell, 29, of 1041 Third St., will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Foster Funeral home with the Rev. Ray Block officiating and with burial in Graceland cemetery. Flag-folding services will be conducted by the American Legion Post 191. Friends may call at the Foster Funeral home after 6 p.m. tonight.

Kenneth Steven McConnell, son of Kenneth and Edna Adams McConnell, was born Feb. 2, 1952 in Webster City and was reared and educated here.

He attended the Universal Heavy Construction school at Miami, Fla., and served with the U.S. Army in various locations in the United States and also in France.

He was employed for several years by the Chicago and North Western railroad and three years by the Van Hauen Construction Co. For the past two years he had been employed by the Barhite and Larsen Construction Co. of Iowa Falls.

He is survived by one son and one daughter, Kendall McConnell, Forrestville, Texas, and Chandra McConnell, Webster City; his mother, Mrs. Edwin (Edna) Bakken of Rowan, Iowa; his father, Kenneth H. McConnell of Webster City; one brother and four sisters, Harold H. McConnell, Warner Robbins Air Force base, Georgia, Sonja McConnell, Mrs. Michael (Mary) Foster, Mrs. Michael ( Andrea) Hilpipre and Mrs. Duane (Clarette) Sprecher, all of Webster City; two half-brothers, Gregory McConnell of Webster City and Eddy Bakken of Rowan and a step-sister, Lisa Ford of Webster City. Also surviving is his grandmother, Mrs. Mary Belle Urich of Rowan.

He was a member of the First Baptist church, the VRW and the American Legion Post 191.
