Daily Freeman Journal, Tuesday, August 12, 1930

Newet Marcelious Ostlund was born at Duncombe, Dec. 24, 1887 and died at his home 833 Boone street, Webster City, Iowa Sunday, Aug. 3. He was 42 years of age. Death resulted from pneumonia and complications which had confined him to his bed nearly a week. He had not been in good health for some time past but his condition was not considered serious.

As an infant he was baptized in the Christian faith. He grew up in the atmosphere of a Christian home. On Nov. 8, 1903 he was confirmed in the Lutheran church at Duncombe, and he had been a faithful member of that congregation since that time. His entire life had been spent in the vicinity of Duncombe and Webster City, with the exception of about one year during his youth which was spent in Sioux Falls, S.D., with his parents. Since coming to Webster City he and his family had been active and loyal to the organizations of the local English Lutheran church. He was a man of strong Christian faith and principles; admired and respected by all who knew him.

On Sept. 21, 1917 he was united in marriage with Mary Clelland, of Duncombe. To this union three sons were born. They are William Conrad, aged 12; Robert Quentin, aged 10, and John Weldon aged 5.

For several years after marriage he was engaged in farming south of Duncombe. In the spring of 1923 he discontinued farming and took up the farm implement business in Webster City. Through hard work, efficient service, and honest dealings he had built up and enjoyed a good business.

Besides his wife and three sons he leaves his father, John Ostlund of Duncombe; two brothers, Oscar of New York, and David, of Duncombe; three sisters, Mrs. J.A. Knutson, of Ames, and Mrs. Frank Hoover and Mrs. Perck Jones, both of Duncombe. One sister, Mrs. Carl Peterson, preceded him in death, and also his mother who died only last October.

Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Methodist church in Webster City, preceded by a brief service at the home. Burial was in Graceland cemetery. The services were in charge of Rev. E.A. Piper of this city and Rev. Thoreson of Thor. Music was furnished by Mr. and Mrs. Harold Olson, of Ames, and by a quartette composed of Harold Anderson, Andrew Anderson, Clarence Housken and Clarence Jacobson all of Duncombe. Harold Anderson, Andrew Anderson, Henry Anderson, Alfred Anderson, Martin Anderson and William Anderson, all of Duncombe, were the pall bearers.
