Velma Pelz, 97, of Blairsburg, died Saturday, December 19, 2015 at Van Diest Medical Center. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, December 23, 2015 at Foster Funeral and Cremation Center with Pastor Jeff Flagg officiating. Burial will be in Blairsburg Cemetery, north of Blairsburg. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Velma Ruth Jaynes was born on a farm near Williams, Iowa on September 26, 1918 to Helen and Oliver Jaynes. She was baptized in the Methodist Church in Williams. Velma graduated from Williams High School in 1937. She was united in marriage to Wendell Pelz on June 16, 1940 at Clarion, Iowa. To this union five children were born, RoJean, Judi, Betty Jo, Raymond and Don.

Because of her love of people, Velma worked part-time, most of her life, as a waitress in several restaurants in the Blairsburg area. She loved to bake and was famous around Blairsburg for her wonderful pies. Velma liked to embroider and go out to eat with her niece, Lorraine, and the ladies. Velma was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching her great-granddaughter, Kalli, play basketball for Northeast Hamilton. Her greatest love was that of her friends and family! She was a member of the Hamilton County Saddle Club and the Pony Express Riders of America.

Velma was preceded in death by her husband Wendell Pelz, son Raymond Pelz, and daughter, RoJean Spore. She was also proceeded by her parents, an infant brother, brother, Earl Jaynes; sisters, Leona Wood, Blanche Doyle and Nellie Cheyne.

Velma is survived by her children Judi (Ron) Claude of Woolstock, Betty Jo Mastin of Webster City and Don (DeeAnn) Pelz of Ankeny; 14 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Cleone Pelz of Webster City and Maxine (Ward) Clemmo of Puyallup, WA; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Velma had resided at the Southfield Wellness Community since 2012.

She will be sadly missed by her family that loved her and those who knew what a kind heart she had!
