Gertrude I. Ermels, 78, lifelong Webster City resident, died Monday afternoon at the Hamilton County hospital where she had been a patient for one day. She had been in ill health for several years.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday - June 28 - at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church with Father Joseph Sullivan celebrating the Mass. Burial will be at Graceland Cemetery. Scripture services will be held Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Foster Funeral home. Friends may call at Fosters after 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Gertrude Ione Mertz, daughter of James and Mary Kathryn Yaus Mertz, was born April 13, 1906 at Webster City and graduated from Webster City High School in 1924. She was secretary for the Foster Funeral home when it was located on Second St. and also when the location was moved to Willson Ave.

On Aug. 29, 1945 she was united in marriage to Barney M. Ermels at Webster City. The couple had always resided in Webster City.

In 1952 Mrs. Ermels became a stockholder and continued as corporate secretary of Foster's. She retired in August of 1970 after 45 years at Foster's.

Mrs. Ermels was preceded in death by her husband in January of 1975. She continued to reside at 1006 Boone St. until moving to Crestview Manor in November of 1983.

Mrs. Ermels was survived by two sisters and one brother, Mrs. Velva Jacobson of Ames; George Mertz and Opal Mertz, both of Webster City, also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, one in infancy; and one sister.

Mrs. Ermels was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic church, the Rosary Society and the American Legion Auxiliary.
