George A. Mertz, 90, Webster City, died Friday, Dec. 23, at Crestview Manor. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Dec. 27, at the Foster Funeral Home, Rev. Raymond M. Roden officiating. Burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery, with graveside flag-folding services conducted by American Legion Post 191 of Webster City. Friends may call at Foster Funeral Home after 4 p.m. today until time of service Tuesday.

George Andrew Mertz, son of James and Mary Kathryn Yaus Mertz, was born Oct. 3, 1898, in Webster City, where he was educated. During WWI, he served with the European Theater of action, and served with the Iowa National Guard for several years. On Dec. 31, 1921, he married Halma Sexe in Webster City. The couple always resided in Webster City, where Mr. Mertz was employed with The Daily Freeman-Journal for 58 years. He retired in 1967, and had been a resident of Crestview Manor since May 1988.

He is survived by his wife; daughter and son-in-law, Peggy and James Foster, Webster City, four grandchildren, Karen (Mrs. John) Moenck, Washington; Chris R. Foster, Minneapolis; Paul A. Foster, Ames; Caroline Foster, Washington, D.C.; one grandchild, two sisters, Velva Jacobson, Ames; and Opal Mertz, Webster City; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers and two sisters.

He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, American Legion Post 191, and was a former member of the American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps.
