Local cyclist killed in Sunday mishap

Rites set Wednesday for Carpenter, 18

Brian J. Carpenter, 18, of Webster City, was instantly killed Sunday evening at about 10:18 when he lost control of his motorcycle and crashed into a wooden guard post protecting a light pole about 100 feet east of the C&NW railroad tracks on East Bank Street.

Police records indicate the youth was heading west on East Bank when the tragic mishap occurred.

Carpenter, who was not wearing a protective helmet, smashed head-first into the pole.

His motorcycle skidded on, coming to rest in the grassy parking a few feet beyond the pole. The body was 11 feet from the edge of the blacktop road, the police reported.

The first persons at the scene were Joseph Moore, Shelly Gatewood and Marty Christian.

Police officers investigating the accident included Gene Timmons and Dave Hanson.

Carpenter was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Carpenter of 1613 Willson Avenue.

Funeral services for Brian J. Carpenter will be held at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Church of Christ with Mervyn Moberly officiating and with burial in Graceland cemetery.

Friends may call at the Foster Funeral home after 1 p.m. Tuesday and until 9:30 a.m. Wednesday when the casket will be taken to the church.

Brian Jay Carpenter, son of Albert M. and Donna Stemsrud Carpenter, was born July 29, 1963 at Webster City. He was reared and educated here and was graduated with the Class of 1981.

He was currently a student at Iowa Central Community college in Webster City.

He is survived by his parents; three brothers and a sister, Kevin Carpenter of West Des Moines, Keith Carpenter of Webster City, Chris Carpenter, at home, and Lorinda Carpenter, also at home; two nephews, Greg and Jamie Carpenter, and his grandparents, Fay I. and Edith Carpenter of Webster City, and Clinton and Ruth Stemsrud, also of Webster City.

He was a member of the Church of Christ.
