The Daily Freeman JournalMary Hoffman, 77, of Marshalltown, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, March 3, 2015, at Villa Del Sol, Marshalltown, Iowa.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday March 14, 2015, at the Mitchell Family Funeral Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. There will be no visitation; a gathering time will be after the celebration. Memorials may be directed to the family. For condolences or questions please visit: www.mitchellfh.com . Mary Eunice Patterson was born in Webster City, Iowa, March 18th, 1937. She was the daughter of Roy Edward and Gertrude Helen (Treanor) Patterson. She attended school in the Webster City Community School District graduating with the class of 1955, Mary went on to St Anthony School of Nursing in Carroll, Iowa and received her RN Degree in 1958. Mary was united in marriage to her first husband and they were blessed with 4 children, Margee in 1959, Mark in 1961, Beth in 1962 and Steven in 1964. She had worked in Jefferson until they divorced in 1968. Mary and her kids moved to Marshalltown where she worked at the Iowa Veterans Home and the Marshalltown Community Hospital. Mary met her second husband "Fritz" and on January 11th of 1975 was united in marriage at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, they moved to San Diego, California a place they enjoyed very much as they got to enjoy, pro baseball, football, "Go Packers and Chargers," attend playoffs of the World Series, Olympic ceremonies and also deep sea fished. They enjoyed the beaches and traveling into Mexico and enjoyed trips to Las Vegas. Mary also enjoyed the spotlight by being on several game shows such as The Price is Right, Child's Play, and Match Game Hollywood Squares.
Fritz passed away in December of 1999 and she moved back to Iowa and worked at the Iowa Veterans Home retiring in 2002. Once a nurse always a nurse, she returned to Webster City to care for Mary Keller Spellmeyer until her death and continued to live there, a place she called home.
Left to cherish Mary's memory are her children: Margaret Spencer of Kansas City, Missouri, Mark Umbaugh of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Beth Umbaugh of Des Moines, Iowa and Steven Umbaugh of LeGrand, Iowa, grandchildren: Stuart Gardner and Joshua Gardner, great-grandchildren, Madison Brooke and Alani Ann Marie Gardner, nieces, Pat Cummings, Linda Shrader, Robyn Krienert, Judy Marxer, Cheri Norris and Pam Thomas, nephews: Mike Patterson, Phillip Paterson, plus several great nieces and nephews.
In death Mary rejoins her parents, Roy and Gertrude, husband, Fritz, Brothers, Jack, Ned, and Robert Patterson and mother-in-law, Goldie Hoffman.
