The daughter of Avo and Bernard Westervelt, Barbara was born in Churdan, Iowa and grew up in Webster City, Iowa, where she graduated from high school and junior college. After attending the School of Journalism at the University of Missouri, Columbia, she was employed with newspapers in Iowa and Pennsylvania. She enlisted in the W.A.V.E.S., U.S. Naval Reserve, in May 1943 and served until after the conclusion of World War II, first as a Link Trainer instructor at Whiting Field, Fl, and later as a public relations officer in Washington, D.C.
In 1946 she became assistant director of public relations for Link Aviation Co., Binghamton, N.Y., a position she held until her marriage to Barton Seney on May 7, 1948. The couple moved to Kansas City in 1950. Barbara was a volunteer for the American Cancer Society for about 25 years and was the first woman elected chairman of the board of directors of that organization's Missouri Division. She retired in 1990 after 18 years as editor of Hardware & Farm Equipment, a monthly trade magazine published in Kansas City. She was a member of Northminister Presbyterian Church and Unit 9 of the W.A.V.E.S. national veterans' organization.
She was preceded in death by her husband, who died in 2003, her parents and a brother, Morris Westervelt. Surviving are her daughter and son-in-law, Gail and Mike Hennessy; her three grandchildren, Kerry (Eric) Davidson, Adam (Robby) Hennessy and Ryan Hennessy; her two great grandchildren, Avery and Connor Davidson.
