Both Koop and another passenger, Dean Anderson, 20, Webster City, were also hospitalized but were reported as not being seriously injured.

Highway Patrolman Don Sturges reported that the car in which the youths were riding had been traveling at a high rate of speed, racing a car driven by Robert Barkema, 19, Jewell, when another car come westbound over a hill. The Barkema car reportedly continued eastward, while the Koop car went out of control and into the south ditch.

According to Sturges, the out-of-control vehicle skidded into the ditch on the south side of the highway, flipped about 125 feet through the air, flipped again and then rolled about another (?) feet, coming to rest on its wheels in a nearby field.

Osboe was tossed from the rolling car and landed in the field. Osboe's death was the third fatality in Hamilton county since Jan. 1.

Webster City firemen were first notified of the accident by a motorist, and they rushed to the scene with the emergency rescue unit. Koop and Anderson were taken to the hospital in another car, Policeman Dick Kennedy stopping traffic in downtown Webster City to help speed the car to the hospital.

Barkema was fined $25 in police court today here for speeding in excess of 90 miles per hour in the nighttime, according to filed information.
