JEWELL - Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. today at Bethesda Lutheran church here for Gary Douglas Denekas, 16, South Hamilton high school junior, who was fatally injured in a hunting accident near here Saturday.

The Rev. Norbert Jolivette officiated, with Becker's in charge of arrangements. Burial was in Evergreen cemetery, Jewell. The youth was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Denekas of Jewell.

Sheriff E. R. Lear, who investigated the accident which resulted in the youth's death, said that young Denekas had gone hunting Saturday morning with four companions.

As the group was walking along the Chicago and Northwestern railroad tracks a mile and a half west of Jewell, young Denekas dropped his .22 rifle while putting on a stocking cap, the sheriff said.

The gun discharged and the bullet struck the boy in the head. He was pronounced dead on arrival at the Story City hospital, where he was taken by the South Hamilton rescue truck.

Gary Douglas Denekas was born Dec. 24, 1950 at Mary Greeley hospital in Ames.

He is survived by his parents, two sisters, Mrs. Ronald Keigan of Webster City and Mrs. Ronald Foderberg of Ames; by his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Roe of Jewell, and by several uncles, aunts and cousins.
