Lewis Peterson, a well known resident of Stratford, Iowa, has passed to the great beyond. He was born in Des Moines, Iowa, Dec. 12, 1862 and moved with his parents to Swede Bend, Iowa, in 1865. Having resided in this above community for thirty-two years, he moved to sunny Texas in 1897 and united in matrimony in 1903. He moved from Texas in 1906 and settled down in Kansas until 1908, when he moved to the South Marion community of Stratford, Iowa. In 1913 he moved to Stratford and passed away at his home here after a short illness Jan. 26, 1916, his pilgrimage being only 58 years, 1 month and 14 days.

His parents were faithful supporters of the Methodist church, and being reared a Methodist he loved the same church and contributed to the support of the South Marion church for several years. According to testimonies he professed conversion in his younger days, and at the evangelistic meetings held in Stratford last summer he testified that he was a christian. On his death bed he assured that it was well with his soul, and his last words to his pastor, who called on him two days before he passed away, were these: "If I die I will surely go to heaven."

He is mourned by his beloved wife and three children, one brother in Swede Bend and one sister in Stratford, a father-in-law, five brothers-in-law, one sister-in-law, besides other relatives and friends. May the Lord sustain them in the day of Sorrow.

The funeral service was held Jan, 28th from the South Marion church, and was conducted by Rev. Nels Pearson, taking the words in Eccl. 7:2 as the text: "It is better to go to the house of mourning than to go to the house of feasting." Interment took place in the South Marion cemetery.
