Crash takes second life, Glen Weldon, 69 dies at hospital

A two-car collision four miles east of Webster City on Highway 20 Wednesday night claimed its second victim.

Glen T. Weldon, 69, a widely-known businessman, died at 3:05 p.m. at the Hamilton county hospital of injuries he suffered in the crash.

Weldon's death brought to six the number of persons killed in Hamilton county automobile accidents so far this year.

Weldon was a passenger in a car being driven by his wife, Freda. He had been listed in critical condition by the Hamilton county hospital suffering from chest injuries.

Mrs. Electia V. Hoshaw, 72, of Webster City, the crash's first victim, was pronounced dead on arrival at the local hospital following the mishap. She was a passenger in a car being driven by her husband, Orva.

Orva Hoshaw, 75, and Freda Weldon, 66, drivers of the cars, are listed in satisfactory condition at the local hospital. Hoshaw suffered chest injuries while Mrs. Weldon suffered hip and shoulder injuries in the accident.

The accident occurred about 5:45 p.m. Wednesday when the Hoshaw vehicle collided broadside with the Weldon car during a period of dense fog as the Weldon car pulled onto the highway from a farm drive.

Weldon rites to be Saturday

Funeral services for Glen Weldon, 69, will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Asbury United Methodist church with the Rev. S. W. Cunningham officiating and with burial in Graceland cemetery.

The casket will be taken to the church at 12:30, and will remain closed. Foster Funeral home is in charge of the services.

Glen Thomas Weldon, son of E. Scott and Lorena Thomas Weldon, was born Feb. 21, 1901, on a ranch near Oral, S.D. He was raised on a ranch at the edge of the Black Hills and was graduated from Hot Springs, S.D. high school.

He received his bachelor's degree from Morningside college at Sioux City and his master's degree from the University of Iowa. He studied toward his PhD at the University of Iowa and Columbia University, New York City.

He taught school at Magnolia, Iowa, later moving to Ardmore, S.D. and he was united in marriage to Freda A. Barker on June 7, 1927 at Hot Springs, S.D. The couple made their home at Ardmore where Mr. Weldon was superintendent of schools.

He also taught school at Cavour and Conde, S.D. and later at Primghar, Iowa, before moving to Webster City in 1939 to enter the insurance and real estate field. At the time of his death he was still active as the general agent of the Glen T. Weldon Insurance Agency.

He is survived by his wife, one son and one daughter, James S. Weldon of Omaha and Beth Weldon Neff of Iowa Falls; five grandchildren, Susan, Elaine and Ann Weldon of Omaha and Karen and Craig Neff of Iowa Falls; one brother, Floyd Weldon of Hot Springs, S.D., one sister, Willa Crom of Mesa, Ariz., and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist church, the Elks lodge, the Masonic Lodge, the Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis club and the Webster City Country club.
