Iola Garvey, age 97, of Webster City and formerly of Boone, died November 18, 2014, at the Southfield Wellness Community in Webster City. Following her wishes, she has been cremated.

A Memorial Mass will be Saturday, November 22, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. at the Church of the Sacred Heart in Boone with Rev. Randy Schon officiating. Burial of her cremains will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Iola Marguerite Garvey was born in Boone on August 12, 1917, the daughter of LeRoy and Elsie (Jacobson) Lindmark. Iola was an only child and grew up on a farm north of Boone, attending country school until the eighth grade.

She graduated from Boone High School in 1934 and attended business school in Des Moines, now A.I.B.

During W.W. II, Iola worked at the Ordnance Plant in Ankeny.

Her courtship with her future husband, John Sylvester ‘Syl’ Garvey, was in the form of letters for three years as John was stationed in the Pacific during the war. They were married in Boone on September 18, 1945.

During the war, they initially settled in California and after the birth of their first son, moved back to Iowa and lived on the Lindmark farm where they raised seven children.

Iola worked at the Boone County Courthouse in the Social Services Department, first as a secretary and then as a case worker. She retired in 1979.

She was a member of the Church of the Sacred Heart, the former St. Mary’s Mission, the Boone County Hospital Auxiliary, and the V.F.W. Women’s Auxiliary.

Iola enjoyed sewing clothes and crocheting afghans and rugs, flower and vegetable gardening, canning, growing Christmas cactus, and playing the piano. She and Syl enjoyed traveling.

Iola is preceded in death by her parents and husband.

She is survived by five sons and their wives, Jerry and Toni of Willits, California, Denny and Janell of Ankeny, Dave and Cheryl and Roger and LuAnn, all of Webster City, and Raymond and Melissa of Boone; two daughters, Joan Smith and husband Bob Johnson of Red Oak, and Mary Garvey of Bandon, Oregon; 17 grandchildren; and 32 great grandchildren.

Friends may call at the Schroeder Memorial Chapel on Friday from 2 until 8 p.m. where the family will be present from 6 until 8 p.m. and a Vigil Service will be at 7 p.m. Visitation continues Saturday at the funeral chapel from 8 until 10 a.m.
