Richard C. Mortenson, 81, Jewell, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 7, at 1:30 p.m. at the Federated United Church of Christ in Jewell, Rev. Dean Stille officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation at the Becker Funeral Home in Jewell is this afternoon and evening, with the family receiving visitors from 7-8:30 p.m.; and Saturday morning at the funeral home.

Richard Clifford Mortenson, son of Martin John and Dora Marie (Christensen) Mortenson, was born June 5, 1910, on the farm northeast of Jewell, where he lived his entire life. He attended rural schools and the Jewell public schools. He married Esther Mechaelsen on March 20, 1937 in Kamrar. The couple farmed on the family farm.

He is survived by his wife, Esther, Jewell; five children: Louise Sue Cafferty, Ames; Cliff Mortenson, Cedar Falls; Linda Hove, Kewanee, Ill.; and Clair Mortenson, Boone; 11 grandsons and one granddaughter; two great-grandsons, a stepgrandson; and a sister, Dorothy Van Langen, Jewell.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, four sisters, and a granddaughter, Robyn Christie Mortenson.

Mr. Mortenson was a member of the Federated United Church of Christ in Jewell.
