Obituary for Gregory G. Bock
Reverend Gregory G. Bock peacefully passed away on Tuesday, November 11th, 2014, at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home following a courageous 115-day battle against brain cancer.

Cremation rites will be accorded with the Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services. The family will greet friends from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Gunderson Funeral Home.

Gregory Girton Bock was born March 30th, 1948, in Indianapolis; the first child of Dr. Don Richard Girton Bock and Beverly Jean Petersen Bock. With Dr. Bock's service in the Army Medical Corps, young Greg resided in San Antonio, Kalene, Battle Creek, Washington D.C. and Boone. His father opened a private medical practice in Fort Dodge in 1954. Greg was active in Presbyterian youth group, Boy Scouts, a'capella choir, golf and National Honor Society before graduating from Senior High in 1966.

A Dean's List student at Drake, Greg earned his B.A. degree in 1970. He was a member of Pi Kappa Phi fraternity, and was also introduced to soccer and invited to join the university team. Greg developed a passion for the sport and remained a dedicated player, official and coach from that time forward.

In 1972, Greg completed his M.A. degree at the University of Missouri, Columbia. During 5 years of teaching at Jefferson City High School, Greg was selected as a teacher of the year. The family returned to Iowa where he attended the University of Dubuque Theological Seminary. Graduating top of his class, Greg received his M.Divinity and was ordained a Presbyterian minister in 1981. For over 20 years, he faithfully served congregations in South Bend, Iron Hill, Paullina, Cedar Falls, Grundy Center and his home church of Fort Dodge.

Greg married his soul mate Julie Ann Cue Valley in 2001. He resumed his teaching career at Iowa Central Community College in the Social Sciences department. Greg also became the inaugural head coach of the Webster City High School girls soccer program. During his 9-year tenure, numerous team members received All-Conference recognition and Greg was honored by his peers as a Conference Coach of the Year.

Always active, Greg enjoyed guiding Cumberland Mountains backpacking and Boundary Waters canoe trips, golf, tennis, history, movies, model railroading, landscaping and feeding wildlife. He and Julie were loyal Hawkeye, Viking, Cyclone and Twins fans. Memberships included Fort Dodge Country Club, Fort Dodge Tennis Club, Noon Kiwanis board and various soccer association boards. A USSF-, IAHSAA-, and IGHSAU-certified official for youth, college and adult soccer, Greg centered numerous CIML, MVC and playoff matches and volunteered as an Iowa Games official since its inception.

Greg will be remembered for his unwavering personal integrity, talent for sharing knowledge, attentive listening skills, dedication to sportsmanship, competitive enthusiasm, generosity and humble gentleness. His ready smile and sparkling blue eyes projected his kind manner toward everyone. During his devastating illness, Greg never once complained.

Greg will be dearly missed by his loving wife Julie; children Emily (David), Carlton, Aaron (Kelsey) and Amanda (Tim); grandchildren Bria and Calvin; siblings Marcus (Diane) and MaryJo (Rev. Paul); in-laws Glenn and Marie Cue; furball Molly and several nieces and nephews. Greg's parents and brothers-in-law David and Dennis preceded him to Heaven.

The family extends a heartfelt thank you to all Greg's dear friends, wonderful neighbors especially Troy Grove and Chris Tiernan, former Lynx soccer players and very special caregivers who uplifted and comforted him in so many ways.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Greg's family in his honor.

"It's a lovely day for soccer!" - Coach Bock
