The Daily Freeman JournalLeola McCollough, 93, of Webster City, died Friday, December 14, 2012 at her home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday December 19, at the Faith United Methodist Church, with Rev. Jim Gochenouer officiating. Private burial will be in the Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Faith United Methodist Church from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday.
Leola Velma Stone, daughter of Clarence Clayton and Olive Annie Kahl Stone, was born January 23, 1919 on a farm north of Blairsburg. She attended country school through the 8th grade, then attended Lincoln High in Webster City, graduating in 1935. She received her teacher certificate in 1937, however never taught school as she was a cashier at J. C. Penney Company for about a year and then became a private secretary to McKinley McCollough who later became her father-in-law. She married John A. McCollough on November 9, 1941, and continued to work for a time and then stayed home to raise their children, Connie Sue and Blaine.
Leola was active in community work, being past president of the Hamilton County T B. Association and also past president of North Grade P.T.A. She was a Girl Scout Leader for several years. She served her church in many ways, being past president of Women's Society of World Service two separate times, and also treasurer two different times. Through the years she had held many other offices and served on many committees of the Women's Missionary organization (now United Methodist Women).
She was a Sunday school teacher and Superintendent of the Junior Department (4th, 5th and 6th grades) in the Sunday school. She was a Trustee of the Church and member of the Board. She was the delegate to the Annual Conference the year the E.U.B. Church merged with the Methodist Church. She and John were members of the State Board of Laity. Leola's roots in her church were deep as her two great-grandfathers helped originate Mulberry Center Church and were charter members.
Leola began playing piano for the Men's Quart of the United Brethren Church at the age of 12 and later church pianist as were her mother and her daughter at other times. She sang alto in the choir from the age of 12 or 13, taking a few years off for children and vacations, and after becoming 65, played again for the choir as a substitute. She felt that God had given her a talent and she must use it in His service. It was her fervent hope that through her music, someone might turn to Jesus. She was a member of the Sweet Adelines at two different times in her life and later was a guardian for her Aunt Bertha Kahl. She and John believed in young people and helped many attend Westmar College through a scholarship fund they set up there. She was a former member of the Webster City Women's Club. Leola was actively involved in the McCollough's operation as vice-president and secretary until age 65.
Mrs. McCollough is survived by her husband of 71 years; daughter and son-in-law, Connie Sue and Jerry Haidle; son and daughter-in-law, Blaine and Bonnie McCollough, all of Webster City; grandchildren and spouses, Derek and Joy Haidle of Maple Grove, MN; Caren Rector; Claudia Haidle; Sara Haidle of Houston, TX; Tia and JD King of Pappillion, NB ; Tara and Mark Todd of Staunton, VA; Sarah and Dion Grady of Johnston; Thea and Adam Wibholm of Williams; Clint Everett of Webster City; great-grandchildren, Alex and Olivia Haidle; McKenzie, Dakota and Kassi King; Henry and Sadie Todd; Tea and Alise Grady; Aspen and Dane Wibholm; Cory Osbourne; Yu'neek McKnight and Nat McKnight.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Vernon Stone.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Faith United Methodist Church.
