Kenneth Balvanz, age 78, of Alden, died on Monday, August 9, 2010 at his home in Alden. Funeral services will be 2 PM Friday at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Alden. Visitation will be 5-7 P.M. Thursday at the Surls Funeral Home in Alden.

Kenneth Balvanz, age 78, of Alden, died on Monday, August 9, 2010 at his home in Alden. Funeral services will be 2 PM Friday at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Alden. Visitation will be 5-7 P.M. Thursday at the Surls Funeral Home in Alden.

Kenneth Charles Balvanz was born on July 28, 1932 in Eldora, Iowa, the son of Frank and Hattie (Lettow) Balvanz. He graduated from the Eldora High School. Kenneth served in the U.S. Army from 1953-55. On February 20, 1955 Kenneth was united in marriage to Ellen Dettbarn at Eldora. Kenneth was baptized on Sept. 24, 1932 and was confirmed on April 14, 1946 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church; a member of the Collins-Dunning American Legion Post #201 of Alden and the Aid Assoc. for Lutherans.

Kenneth is survived by his two sons, Jeff and his wife, Denise of Ames and Frank and his wife, Kim of Marion; a brother, Marvin (Mick) and his wife, Joan of Eldora; two sisters, Irene Ziesman of Eldora and Janet Bradford of Bakersfield, CA; and ten grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Ellen.
