Janice (Kay) Mechaelsen, 69, of Kamrar died Saturday, October 10, 2009 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, Iowa. A Funeral service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 13, 2009 at the Community Church southeast of Kamrar. Burial will follow in the Community Church Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Community Church from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Monday evening and after 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday at the church. Arrangements were made with the Foster Funeral & Cremation Center in Webster City.

Janice Kay Songer daughter of Donald Sr. and Ethel Raven Songer was born on August 10, 1940 in Webster City. She received her education and graduated from Webster City Lincoln High School in 1958. On February 14, 1959 she married Alfred James Mechaelsen at the Presbyterian Church near Kamrar. The couple resided in rural Kamrar where Kay was a self employed child care provider for over 20 years. She had also worked part time at River View Early Childhood Center in Webster City.

Survivors include her husband of over 50 years, Alfred Mechaelsen of Kamrar; son and daughter-in-law, Lendall and Marcia Mechaelsen of Kamrar; daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Paul Huisman of Webster City; Glenda and Jeff Meyer of Williams; grandchildren, Mandy (Dave) Powers, Angela Huisman, Lucas and Marcus Mechaelsen, AJ, Leah, and Stacey Meyer; great grandchildren, Cassandra Paulson, Lauren and Chloe Powers; sisters, Beverly (Lute) Olson; Shirley (Jerry) Trusty all of Webster City; brothers, Donald (Shirley) Songer of California; Gary Songer of Nevada; Ronald (Barb) Songer of Denison and many nieces and nephews.

Kay was preceded in death by her parents. She was a member of the Community Church in Kamarar where she was active in Women's Fellowship, Kids Live, Bible School, and Sarah's Circle. Kay loved spending time with her family, friends and attending her grandchildren's activities.
