Jewell South Hamilton Record News, August 5, 2009

Vera Irene Jewell was born August 1, 1907, in Ellsworth, Iowa, the sixth of seven children of Abel and Mary Ahrens. She passed away on June 15, 2009, six weeks before her 102nd birthday.

Vera and Robert (Bob) Jewell, the grandson of the founder of the town of Jewell, were married on October 1, 1931. They continued to live in central Iowa, in Ames, Gilbert, Ellsworth and Jewell, until moving to Southern California in 1967. In 1977 they moved to Willows, California where they spent their retirement years. Bob passed away in 1990.

Vera remained active in her church work and childcare in the community until severe dementia changed her quality of life in recent years. She was fortunate to be able to continue living in her home of 32 years until the time of her death.

Bob and Vera had two children who survive: Elaine Brandeland and her husband Hank of Willows, California; Robert Jewell and his wife Sharon of Webster City, Iowa. Their grandchildren are: Paul Brandeland and wife Tina of San Jose, California; Julie Brandeland Goodwin and her husband Dan of Brentwood, California; Robert Jewell and wife Sue of Brainerd, Minnesota; James Jewell and wife Marsha of Milford, Iowa; and Doreen Jewell Crespin and husband Bob of Long Beach, California. Vera is also survived by numerous great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Vera’s long life was held at the Willows Methodist Church on June 20, 2009, and she was buried beside her husband Bob at the Willows Cemetery.
