Myrtle Barkema, age 92, a longtime Jewell area resident, died Sunday, July 1, 2007 at the Stratford Nursing and Rehabilitation in Stratford. Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 6, 2007 at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell. Visitation is Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Becker Funeral and Cremation Service in Jewell.

Myrtle Irene Hanson was born September 22, 1914 in Stanhope to Joel and Hilda (Johnson) Hanson. She grew up in the Stanhope area and attended school in Stanhope. On January 20, 1934 Myrtle married Merle R. Barkema at the parsonage of St. Paul Lutheran Church near Jewell. They lived in Blairsburg for a time, moving to the Jewell area where they farmed a mile and a half north of town. They retired to town in 1976. Myrtle was a homemaker and worked at the turkey plant for many years. She loved baking, gardening, and enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Myrtle was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell.

Myrtle is survived by her son, Roger (Joan) Barkema; a daughter-in-law, Jane Barkema all of Jewell; grandchildren, Ron (Jeannie), Randy (Patty), Brad (Laura), Scott (Sandy), Jay, and Karla; 13 great grandchildren; 4 great-great grandchildren; and a sister, Florence Anderson of Randall.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Merle in 1993; her son, Dick in 2004; and brothers, Oren and Herman.
