Donald C. Garrett, 81, Macksburg, passed away Thursday, May 7, 2009 at Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge, IA. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at United Methodist Church in Macksburg. Pastor Sandra Smith will officiate. Burial will be at the Moon Cemetery, south of Macksburg,. Visitation will be held 2-8 p.m. Monday, May 11, 2009 at the Powers Funeral Home, in Creston, with family receiving friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorials are to the family. Donald Carlton Garrett, son of Russell and Lillian Grandfield Garrett, was born Jan. 26, 1928 in Douglas Township, Union County, Iowa. On March 16, 1947 he married Norma Butcher in Hiawatha, Kansas. Early in their marriage, they operated a gas station in Macksburg. The couple also farmed for many years before moving to Colorado Springs, Colo. where he enjoyed working as a camper salesman at a local dealership. They then moved to La Plata, Mo. where he worked as a maintenance man at the Kirksville hospital. Most of his final years were spent working rebuilding cars at their dealership, D and N Cars. Mrs. Garrett died May 9, 1991.

He is survived by his dog, Yogi; three children, Bill Garrett of Bevington, Betty Van Gelder of Oskaloosa, and Annette (Dan) Doolittle of Webster City; 2 grandsons, Matthew (Jenny) Van Gelder of Gurnee, IL, Drew Doolittle of Webster City; brothers Marvin (Harriet) Garrett of Creston, and Robert (Ellen) Garrett of Seven Springs, NC; sisters-in-law Esther Butcher of Creston, and Donna Pettit of Winterset, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by both of his parents; wife, Norma; and his brother Raymond.
