Lynn Habben, 76, of Webster City, IA, died Saturday, December 22nd, 2007 at the Trinity Regional Medical Center in Fort Dodge after a short illness. Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday December 27th at Trinity Lutheran Church in Webster City with Rev. Mike Kroona officiating. Private family burial will held at the Graceland Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Foster Funeral & Cremation Center.
Carroll Lynn Habben, son of Edward and Grace Maude Campbell Habben, was born on August 8, 1931 in Waterloo, Iowa. He graduated from Reinbeck High School in 1949. He attended Iowa State College where he earned his Bachelor’s Degree in 1953 in Agriculture Education. In 1972, he received a Master’s Degree from Iowa State University in Adult Education. While at Iowa State, Lynn was in ROTC and “Advance Rotsee,” which led to his service in the US Army as a Second Lieutenant in Field Artillery, ultimately being assigned to Korea in September 1953 (after the armistice was signed). He returned to Fort Collins, CO in August 1955, with discharge in October 1955. On June 16, 1957, he married Lorraine G. Riensche in Jubilee, Iowa. They moved to Webster City where Lynn was employed for 34 years with the Iowa State University Extension Service (Hamilton County Extension Service). He began his career as the 4-H & Youth Leader in 1956 and after four years became the Extension Director retiring in 1990. Lynn worked for North Central Turf as a Turf Specialist and Consultant from 1991-2008.
In addition to his wife Lorraine, he is survived by his sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Angela Habben of Denver, CO., Jeff Habben and Veronique Keppenne of Urbandale, IA., Craig and Shelly Habben of Billings, MT.; grandchildren, Lyndsay, Brittany, Amandine, Nigel, Chase, Emma and Clay Habben; brother and sister-in-law Duane and Betty Habben of Dike, IA.; sister and brother-in-law, Cecile and Robert Powers of Waterloo, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mr. Habben was an active member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Webster City where he served as vice-president and president on the church council, taught Sunday School and served on various boards and committees. He was also active in the Webster City Kiwanis Club, where he served as a past president, was on the Kiwanis board and recruited over 25 new members. Lynn was an active part of the Iowa State University Extension Association and the Iowa Association of County Extension Directors, serving on the board of directors for both. He was Hamilton County ISU Alumni Club President as well as Cyclone Club President. Lynn served as treasurer on the board of the Boone Valley Housing since 1992. He also was involved in numerous other community boards, committees and clubs. A few of Lynn’s most prominent awards included: National Distinguished Service Award for the National Association of County Agricultural Agents, ISU R.K. Bliss Extension Citation, election to the Iowa State 4-H Hall of Fame, Friend of the Hamilton County Fair and a Kiwanis George F. Hixson Fellow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Trinity Lutheran Church in Webster City, American Diabetes Association, or the Hamilton County 4-H Foundation.
