Violet Peterson, age 86, of Story City, died Monday, November 17, 2008 at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 21, 2008 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Ellsworth. Burial followed at Homewood Cemetery in Ellsworth. Visitation was Thursday evening from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at becker Funeral Home in Jewell.

Violet Ilene Coughenour was born November 21, 1921 in Colo, Iowa to Isaac and Agnes (Bowers) Coughenour. She graduated from Colo High School in 1939. During World War II, Vi worked at the Consolidated Airplane Factory office in San Diego, California, where "Rosie the Riveter" also worked. She returned to Iowa after the war.

On September 8, 1946, Vi married Wendell Peterson in Colo, Iowa. They farmed in the Ellsworth and Radcliffe area. Vi was active in the community; she was a Sunday school teacher and Bible School Superintendant, ALCW president, Girl Scout Leader, and 4-H leader. In 1985, whe moved to Ames and operated Scandia Imports and Tea Room for 10 years with her daughter, Jane. Vi continued her Norwegian painting as an artist and teacher of traditional rosemaling, which was an important part of her life for many years. she moved with Jane to Virginia, where she worked as a retail associate. She really enjoyed her time on the East Coast and talked of it often. They moved back to the Midwest to Bloominton, Illinois, where she worked as a full time associate at Bergner's Department Store at the age of 75 years. Vi was a top sales associate there, where she worked until she was 82 years old, retiring due to failing eyesight. In 2006, Vi moved to Story City, and resided at Scandia West.

Vi is survived by her son James Charles (Lisa) Peterson of Jewell; a daughter, Jane Faye Peterson (John) Hope of Tamwoth, England; grandchildren, Carmel Jane Peterson White and Chad Andrew Peterson; greatgrandchildren, Stacia Hashay Scott, SaBreina White, and Christian White; and a great-great grandson, Asher Shively.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1983; a son, Jeffrey Lynn Peterson in 1954; a granddaughter, Anissa Kay Peterson Scott in 1994; and her siblings, Hazel Kelderhouse, Levi Coughenour, Lloyd Coughenour, Marie Coughenour, and Ella Troutner.
