Dirk Dwayne Smid, 46, Normal, Ill, died at 4:38 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2008 at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center, Bloomington, Ill. His funeral was held Monday, May 19 at Calvary United Methodist Church in Normal with Dr. Randall K Perry officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery in Bloomington. Calvert and Metzler Memorial Home in Bloomington, Ill handled arrangements.

Memorials may be made to the Calvary United Methodist Church Building Fund, Normal, Ill., Fellowship of Christian Athletes or the University of Iowa Holden Comprehensive Cancer Center, 200 Hawkins Dr., Iowa City, IA 52242-1009.

He was born Dec. 2, 1961 at Webster City, the son of Wayne and Billie Dunn Smid. He married Christi Adair on July 28, 1984 at Toledo, IA. She survives.

Other survivors include his parents, Wayne and Billie Smid of Webster City; three daughters, Clair Louise Smid, Laine Adair Smid, and Paige Ryan Smid, all at home in Normal, Ill.; five brothers and sisters, Jeff (Karen) Smid, Davenport; Faye (Jon) Bowles, Chandler, Ariz.; Paul (Peggy) Smid, Naperville, Ill.; Perry Smid, Austin, Texas; and Rachael (Mike) Yndestad, Huntley, Ill.

Also surviving is his grandmother, Lola Dunn of Webster City; father and mother-in-law, Frank and Floriss Adair, Toledo; nieces and nephews, Alyssa and Jonny Bowles, Jack, Megan and Danny Smid; Annika Yndestad Brant; Natalie and Lily Kreun; and several other nieces and nephews; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Mike and CeAnn Kreun, Bloomington, Ill.; Larry and Diane Criswell, Kickapoo, Ill.; Tim and Debra Miller, Humboldt; Randy and Denise Wade, North English; Damon and Kaye Adair, Perry.

His grandparents, Edward and Louise Smid, and W.A. Dunn preceded him in death.

Dirk graduated from Alden High School, Alden, Iowa, in 1980, and Central College in Pella with a BA in May 1984. He received his master’s degree from the University of Iowa, Iowa City, in 1990. He received a certificate of advanced study from Illinois State University, Normal, in 1999 and he was a National Board Certified Teacher.

Dirk had been teaching math at University High School since 1990. He coached football at University High School from 1990 to 2001 and was head coach from 1992 to 2001. He was a former assistant football coach at Normal Community West from 2003 to 2005 and was a former assistant football coach at Illinois Wesleyan in 2006.

He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church in Normal, where he taught junior high Sunday school.

Dirk was the faculty sponsor for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes at U High.
