Sterling Eudene Lund, 86, of Story City passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames, on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2008, at 11 a.m. at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, 2008 at Bethesda Lutheran Church, Jewell.

Sterling was born on July 27, 1921 in rural Hamilton County to Ole C. and Mary (Sansgaard) Lund. He attended country school near Jewell. He joined the United States Army in December of 1942 and served his country valiantly in Guam and Okinawa. He was honorably discharged in March of 1946, after which he became a member of the American Legion in Jewell. He was joined in marriage to Arleen Kalseim on March 4, 1945 at Arleen’s parent’s home near Jewell.

Sterling’s life passion was farming which he began at an early age, working for many area farmers. Upon his return from the service, he began farming independently. In 1958, Sterling and Arleen moved to the Lund family farm near Jewell where they lived happily for forty-seven years.

Throughout his life Sterling served on many community boards of directors. Among those were: Bethany Manor; Beloit Children’s Home; Hamilton County ASCS; and Hamilton County 4-H Extension Council. He was a 4-H club leader as well as the superintendent of the livestock sale at the Hamilton County Fair. He was a life-long member of Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell where he served as head usher for many years. In July of 2005, Sterling and Arleen moved from the farm to Timberland Village in Story City.

Sterling is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-two years, Arleen of Story City; son, Eudene (Susan) Lund of Jewell; daughter, Mary Hall and granddaughter, Melissa Hall both of Ames; brother, Luther (Pauline) Lund of Jewell; sister-in-law, Esther Lund of Story City; many nieces, nephews, cousins, and a large circle of friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Arthur.

Memorial gifts may be designated to Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell, Bethany Life Communities in Story City, or Israel Family Hospice House in Ames. Becker Funeral and Cremation Service in Jewell has been entrusted with arrangements.
