John Knox dropped dead Wednesday night at 8:20 o'clock.

John W. Knox dropped dead in his chair by the fire, death coming from heart disease. Mr. Knox had been in poor health for a long time suffering from heart trouble and a complication of other diseases. However he had not been confined to his bed since last October. In fact, for some time past, he has appeared in very good health. He has been up and around doing some of the chores about the place and eating heartily even on the day of his death. He was sitting by the fire, having removed his shoes, and was warming his feet preparatory to going to bed. Suddenly without a second's warning, Mr. Knox fell over and without a word and barely a breath was dead.

The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon at one o'clock from the Congregational Church here, and was conducted by Rev. Cole. The remains were interred in the cemetery at Jewell.

John W. Knox was born at Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, June 23, 1848, and died at his home five miles west of Jewell, February 6, 1909 at the age of 60 years, 7 months, and 8 days. With his parents he moved from West Virginia to Madison County, Ohio, when but a small boy. With his mother he came to Hamilton County, Iowa, in 1872, living a mile and a quarter east of Jewell until about twelve years ago. About four years ago, he moved with his family to the farm where was his home at the time of his death.

The deceased was married March 31, 1884, to Miss Mary E. Merritt of Jewell. To this union five children were born, two boys and three girls, all of whom survive to mourn the loss of their father, and all of whom were here at the last sad services. The wife and two brothers, Robert and Thomas, also survive.

Mr. Knox united with the Congregational Church in Jewell in 1907. He has always been know as a kind and generous husband and father, a good friend and neighbor, and a loyal, honest and trusted gentleman, and his death is mourned by hosts of friends who join in extending consolation to the bereaved family.
