Nikoli G Stangeland age 93, of Story City, died Monday, January 22, 2001 at Bethany Manor in Story City, where he had resided with his wife for the last two years. Funeral services were held 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 26, 2001 at Bethesda Lutheran Church in Jewell with Rev. Dale Peterson officiating. Burial was in the Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell with Becker Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Nikolai G. Stangeland was born in Ganddal, Norway on October 5, 1907 to Garman G. and Ane (Friestad) Stangeland. At the age of 17 years, Nikolai left his home near Stavanger, Norway and made his way to Jewell, Iowa to work and live near relatives.

On January 24, 1935, Nikolai married Ellen Serina Rullestad. They farmed southeast of Jewell for 40 years. They have resided in Story City for 35 years. Nikolai was a member of the Sons of Norway and Bethesda Lutheran Church. He loved farming and enjoyed his eleven return trips to Norway to be with and share his American family with his Norwegian family.

Nikolai is survived by his wife, Ellen of Story City, a son, Robert Stangeland of Bonita Springs, Florida; two granddaughters, Brenda Vogel and Sherry Schafer both of West Des Moines; three great grandchildren, Nicholas, Jacob, and Rachel; and a sister, Eli Stangeland of Norway. Nikolai was preceded in death by his brothers in Norway, Rasmus, Garman, Lars and Martin, and sisters Inga, Louise, Maria, Anna, Karen, Ragna.

Memorials may be given to Bethany Manor and Bethesda Lutheran Church.
