Merlin E. Williams obituary - Webster City Freeman Journal - January 1977

Jewell- Merlin E. Williams, 85, longtime Jewell resident and former mayor, died yesterday morning at Calvin Manor in Des Moines where he had resided the past 14 months.
Funeral services will be Friday at 2 p.m. at the Federated United Church of Christ in Jewell with Rev. Tom Rehling officiating and with burial in Evergreen cemetery at Jewell. Military rites will be held at graveside. Masonic rites will be held at 8 p.m. tonight at the Becker Funeral home.
He was born March 16, 1891 in rural Webster City, the son of James Edward and Margaret Miller Williams. He moved to Jewell when he was one year old and lived here until February 1975 when he moved to Des Moines.
He operated an insurance agency in Jewell for 42 years, attended the Jewell public schools and served in World War I. He was a member of the Federated Church of Christ, and had served as mayor and councilman in Jewell. He was a member of the Republic Masonic Lodge 468 and also the Order of Eastern Star and the American Legion.
He is survived by one sister, Grace Williams Halsey of 3523 University, Des Moines, and two nieces, Ruth Akerly of Sacramento, California and Lucile Farmald of Shelton, Washington, and several grand-nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
