Olava Buckels, age 85, of Jewell, Iowa, died Thursday, December 28, 1995 at Mary Greeley Medical Center, in Ames, Iowa. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 31, 1995 at the Federated United Church of Christ in Jewell, with Rev. H. Dean Stille officiating. Burial followed at Evergreen Cemetery in Jewell. Friends called Saturday afternoon and evening at Becker Funeral Home in Jewell, with the family present from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.

Anna Olava Hia, was born November 16, 1910 in Ellsworth, Iowa to Iver John and Anna Olava (Bergeland) Hia. She was raised by her foster parents – Bertha (Severson) and Andrew O. Rasmussen in Randall, Iowa. Olava graduated from Randall High School in 1929. On June 29, 1929 she married Lloyd Keith Buckels at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They farmed north of Jewell, moving into town in May of 1973. She had owned and operated Olava’s Ceramics. Olava was a member of the Federated United Church of Christ in Jewell, was a Charter Member of the Jewell Garden Club and was a State Flower Show Jude.

Olava is survived by her husband Lloyd Buckels, Sr. of Jewell; two sons, Lloyd Keith Buckels Jrs. Of Jewell and James Orlean Buckels of San Diego, California; three daughters – Janie Joyce Samuelson of Jewell, Colleen Joan Ossman of Jefferson City, Missouri, and Judy Marlaine Johnson of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; fourteen grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; nineteen greatgrandchildren; and a sister Alice Mortvedt of Story City, Iowa. She was preceded in death by a twin daughter – Janet Joan Buckels, four brothers and two sisters.

Becker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
