Webster City Freeman, March 1896
The Passing of Our Oldest Settler
Mrs. Margaret Brewer, the first settler in Webster City, who had lived in Hamilton County from 47 years, died at her home in the south part of this city Thursday night, March 26, aged 80 years. She had been in feeble health for several years, but was confined to her bed but a few days when the death angel called her home. Margaret Moore was born in Virginia in 1816 and moved with her parents to Indiana in 1824 where she was married to Wilson Brewer in 1839. They came west ten years later and located in Hamilton County in 1849. Eleven children were born to them, 4 girls and 7 boys, 5 of whom are still living. Mr. Brewer died in 1857 since which time she has lived with her children. She was universally respected and was beloved by every Hamilton county pioneer, by whom her death will be deeply mourned. When she located in this picturesque bend of the Boone River 47 years ago there was no evidence whatever of civilization where Webster City now stands. In the intervening years she has seen this “desert bloom and blossom like a rose,” a city of over 5,000 sprung up around her and grand old Iowa became one of the greatest and richest states in the union. Shall we who are young witness as great a change in the 47 years lying before us? Probably not. Her life had not been spent in vain for aside from being an actor in these swiftly changing scenes she sank to her reft honored and respected by all.

The funeral service was held at the late home Saturday
