Daniel Edward Phelps, 11-year- old twin son of Mr and Mrs Eugene Phelps of Bayard, was killed instantly last Thursday at about 4 p m when he was struck by a car on Highway 141 near his home three miles west of Bayard.
A sixth grader at the Bayard school, Daniel had arrived home on the school bus and was riding his bicycle at the time of the tragedy.
According to Highway Patrol Trooper Donald Dreesen of Carroll who investigated, young Phelps was riding his bicycle on the North edge of the road headed east when he veered into the path of a car driven by Fr Frank Palmer, pastor of the St Patrick’s Catholic Church at Bayard who was westbound.
After a lengthy investigation at the scene the body was taken by Starling’s ambulance to Carroll where a doctor pronounced him dead. He was then returned to the Starling Funeral Home in Bayard.
Final rites were held Saturday at 2pm from the Bayard United Methodist Church where Daniel was a member. The pastor, Rev A Keith Hauser, officiated, Miss Lula Games was organist and Boyd Sparks of Grand Junction sang two hymns.
Serving as honorary casketbearers were sixth grade classmates Bob Drake, Doug Vaux, Rod Derry, John Doyle and Tom Vaughan. The casket was carried by Louis Ault, Max Adams, Tom Hall, Edward Kinnick, Norman Crees and Wayne Brown. Interment was made in the Highland cemetery.
Daniel was born November 26, 1961. He is survived by his twin brother, David, and brother, Mark, and sister, Elaine. His parents both survive as do his grandparents, Mr and Mrs Arthur Phelps of Phoenix, Arizona, and Mr and Mrs Herman Ruhde of Manning.
