Martha Underwood was born in Montville, Ohio, January 27th, 1834, and died in Grundy Center June 11, 1913, after a lingering illness of three months. She spent her youth in the place of her birth and there in 1855[sic] was married to Mr. James Comstock. About a year later Mr. and Mrs. Comstock came to Iowa, taking up their residence at Steamboat Rock, where they lived until the early sixties. At the close of the war they came to Grundy Center, Mr. Comstock having been county clerk. In 1872 they moved to New Hartford, where they lived until 1888, and there in 1878 Mr. Comstock died. At the close of her life in New Hartford Mrs. Comstock came to Wellsburg where she made her home for many years with her sister, Mrs. Geo. Wells. In 1907 Mrs. Comstock moved to Grundy Center and has spent the declining years of her life in happy companionship with Mrs. Marie Kelly, who has ministered to her every want.
Among those who hold Mrs. Comstock's life in tender memory is Mrs. Olin Akin, who lived with her from childhood and was married in her home.
Mrs. Comstock was the mother of one child, a son, who died in infancy. All her immediate family have preceded her to the other life except a niece, Mrs. Geo. H. Wheelock, and a nephew, Mr. Geo. Wells Murray, who, with his wife and two children, John G. and Kate M., are left to mourn the loss of one very dear to them.
