Mr. Shafstal had been to Marshalltown with friends, returning home at about 2:30 a.m., and was unable to get into the house or to awaken Miss Plum. He got through a basement window and came upstairs and found her dead, sitting up on the bed, half-reclining, with feet on the floor. Her electric light was still burning. She had spent the evening with Mrs. Hartley, who occupies a part of the house, and went to her room at about 9:30.

She had made her home with the Shafstal family 40 years.
