Obituary of Herbert Downey
Herbert C. Downey was born near Adeline, Ill., May 22d, 1872. He was the oldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Downey both deceased.
In the year of 1889 he moved westward, settling at Morrison, in Grundy county, Ia. On the 29th day of December, 1892, he was united in the holy bonds of matrimony to Miss Maud Morrison. To this union were born six children, Mrs. Wava Blanch Deal of Harris, Ia., Dale Louis, age 11, Harold Herbert, age 9, Wayne Morrison, 6, Gwendolyn Eugenia, 5, and Evelyn Lenora, 19 months.
When 14 years of age he was united with the M.E. church of Adeline, during his residence at Morrison he was a member of the M.E. church and up to the date of his death a member of the M.E. church at Lake Park, Ia., he was also a loyal member of the Morrison, M.W.A. camp, No. 42. Some years ago he was taken sick from which he fairly recovered. He was patient through it all and never shirked his duty toward his family and friends, many times going beyond his strength. He was held in high esteem by all his business associates and loved by a host of friends. His earthly life came to its journey's end, March 3d, 1917, at his home at Harris, Ia., at the age of 44 years, 9 mo., and 12 days.
When he was informed that he was soon to pass to the great beyond, he silently said, "I am aware of it and am prepared and ready to go."
He is deeply mourned by all his family and one brother, O. M. Downey, Morrison, Ia.; Mrs. Geo. Morrill, Morrison, Ia.; and Mrs. Ed. Lynch of Waterloo, Ia.; and a host of relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at his home at Harris, Ia., Monday afternoon, conducted by the M.E. pastor of Lake Park, Ia.
The remains were sent to Morrison, on Tuesday afternoon and services were held at the Presbyterian church by Rev. Hayenga, taking his text in Hebrew 12-1. The floral tributes were many and beautiful. Many coming from his former home, also many from his relatives and friends here. A quartette from Reinbeck furnished the music. The remains were accompanied here by his wife and the six children and son-in-law, Mr. Deal of Harris, Mr. Andy Snow of Lake Park, Mrs. Ed. Cole of Grundy Center, Mrs. Chas. Robinson and O. M. Downey of Morrison.
The relatives from a distance who were here to attend the funeral were; Mr. and Mrs. Lynch of Waterloo; Mrs. Will Downey of Chicago; Mr. Homer Downey of Rochelle; and Mrs. Elmer Blair of Adeline and relatives from Grundy Center and friends from all the surrounding country.
Services were concluded at the Morrison cemetery by the Morrison M.W.A. camp, No. 42.
The stream is calmest when it nears the tide
The flowers are sweetest at eventide
And birds more musical at close of day
And Saints divinest when they pass away.Card of Thanks
We desire to take this means of expressing our heart felt thanks and appreciation to the friends and neighbors both at Harris and Morrison who so kindly assisted us during the sickness and death of our beloved husband and father and also for the floral offerings to the M.W.A. camps and the Reinbeck quartette.
