A Tumbling Rod Takes Life Of Kenneth Brown
He Was Unloading Corn At The Ed Simms Farm; The Rod Caught The Farmhand's Jacket And He Couldn't Get Free
Kenneth Brown was killed at the Edward Simms farm ten miles southwest of Grundy Center about two o'clock last Friday afternoon. He had been employed on the Simms farm a little more than a year. He was helping Mr. Simms husk corn. Mr. Simms was operating the picker and Kenneth Brown took the corn to the farm and unloaded it in a crib. An elevator was used in unloading the corn. The farm tractor was used for power. A tumbling rod connected the tractor with the elevator. This rod caught the jacket worn by Brown. The jacket was made of strong material and wouldn't break. It was twisted about the man's body at the lower part of the abdomen and crushed him. One shoulder was dislocated and the skull was crushed.
No one saw the accident. When Brown was late getting back to the field for another load of corn, Mr. Simms became uneasy and he left the picker in the field and walked towards the farm home. As he approached the place he noticed that the tractor clutch was missing and he realized that something was wrong. Brown was lying in a heap near the tumbling rod and he was dead. The accident happened 20 to 30 minutes before his body was discovered. Mr. Simms removed the man to the barn and called a doctor from Gladbrook. The undertaker took the body to Gladbrook and later it was returned to the Coffman funeral home in Grundy Center. County Coroner Coffman after hearing the story of the accident decided that an inquest was not necessary.
