Dean Newell Died In Waterloo Hospital
Funeral services for Dean Newell, 52, of Reinbeck, were held on Saturday afternoon, Feb. 19, at the First Baptist Church in Reinbeck with Rev. Richard Dayton officiating. Burial was in Washington Township cemetery south of Morrison with French Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Newell was born October 1, 1924, at Laverne, Iowa, a son of Charles and Helen Newell. He graduated from Orange township high school, Waterloo, with the class of 1942, and served with the U.S. Army during World War II until 1946. During the war he was with the military in the European theatre and was captured by the German army, spending three months in a German prisoner of war camp.
On November 24, 1946, he married Bernita Goble at Morrison, and the couple lived in the Waterloo and Cedar Falls community for nearly 20 years, then moved to the state of Tennessee where he operated a Truck Leasing Firm and the couple moved back to Iowa, settling in Reinbeck in 1971 after he purchased the Petersen Oil Tank Wagon operations from Elmer Petersen.
Dean was rushed to Schoitz Memorial Hospital in Waterloo by the Reinbeck Emergency Unit on Friday evening, Feb. 10, and submitted to surgery for bleeding ulcers on Saturday evening, and died last Wednesday, Feb. 16 of an apparent heart attack.
Survivors include his wife, Bernita; one son, David of Cedar Falls; his mother, Mrs. Helen Rivers of Mason City; three sisters, Mrs. Elmer Grant and Mrs. William Wagner, both of Mason City, and Mrs. Ronald McGonigle of San Diego, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his father, one son and one brother.
