Crash kills husband of missing LaPorte woman

The husband of a missing LaPorte City woman was killed early Friday when his car collided head-on with a semi-trailer truck south of Washburn.

Black Hawk County sheriff's deputies identified the victim as Richard C. Harting, 18, of 504 Fillmore St., La Porte City.

Deputies reported Harting was southbound on Highway 218 about one-fourth miles north of county road D-46 when his car crossed the center line and crashed head-on with the truck. The accident was reported at 3:20 a.m.

Harting died instantly of massive head injuries, deputies said. His body was taken to St. Francis Hospital for an autopsy.

The driver of the truck, Harold P. Arnaman, 46, of Argyle, escaped injury.

Deputies said Arnaman was enroute to Minneapolis with a load of 43,000 pounds of caustics used in making ammunition, plus 5,000 pounds of penicillin.

Deputies said they were conducting an intensive investigation into the circumstances of the mishap.

The accident happened on a straight, dry section of road and Harting's car left no skid marks, deputies said.

The road was closed for nearly four hours after the accident while the wreckage was cleared and authorities searched for a reason why the accident happened.

Deputies said Harting's 18-year-old wife, Leni Jo, has been missing since Dec. 5. She was last seen about 8 p.m. that date at American Professional Color Corp., 405 W. Fourth St., visiting a friend.

She was described as 5'4" tall, with blond hair and blue eyes. She was wearing a blue parka when she disappeared.

Deputies ask that anyone having information about her whereabouts call the sheriff's office.

Deputies said the couple's 8-month-old daughter is staying with relatives.

Mr. and Mrs. Harting and their young child had recently moved to La Porte City from Jesup.
