Lyle Buchan Killed On A Road In Minnesota

Body Found On Highway At 2:30 Sunday Morning; There May Have Been Foul Play Or Car May Have Struck Him

Lyle Buchan, 39-year-old son of Wm. Buchan of Grundy Center, was found dead on a main highway 2 1/2 miles from Hector, Minn, about 2:30 Sunday morning. He may have been struck by a car or foul play may have been responsible for his death. Officers in Renville county, Minn., where the killing occurred, are investigating the case.

Mr. Buchan had been working at the Frank Frederickson farm eight miles from Hector, Minn. He had been working there about two months. He drove to Hector with the family Saturday evening and they were with him until 11 o'clock in the evening. He told them he was coming home later. He was seen in Hector with another party later in the evening. This party has not been identified and officers are looking for him. No one saw Buchan leave town. He was lying in the middle of the highway when he was found by two men in a car who immediately notified the coroner. The coroner said the man had been dead about a half hour. He was lying face down. His neck was broken, his skull was fractured, and he was badly bruised on his right side. A hole was ripped in his jacket and one sleeve of the jacket was missing. He had nothing on him to identify him. The two men who found him knew him. He had no money in his pockets. This led to the supposition that he might have been robbed. The nature of his wounds and the position in which he was found indicated that he was hit by a car and that the driver of the car is keeping under cover.

Body Brought to Grundy Center
Grundy relatives were notified Sunday morning. L. D. Coffman and Chas. Biebesheimer drove up Sunday and brought the body back to the Coffman funeral home.

Funeral services were held at the funeral home Tuesday forenoon. The services were conducted by Rev. J. B. Bird, pastor of the Methodist church. Burial was in the Morrison cemetery.

Was Born and Raised in the County
Lyle Buchan was born on a farm in Melrose township and he would have been 39 years old had he lived until the 29th of this month. A few years after his birth the family moved to a farm in Washington township where Lyle grew to manhood. He always regarded Grundy Center as his home. He left here last spring and worked at Estherville. He went to Kansas to work during the harvest, and from there went to Minnesota where he had engaged work on a farm during the fall and winter.

Surviving are his father, Wm. Buchan; one brother, James, from Estherville, and three sisters. The sisters are Mrs. Wm. Bennett and Nelle Hostetter from Chicago, and Mrs. Orlan Stout, Grundy Center.

Those from a distance who were here at the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Bennett, Nelle Hostetter, Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Buchan and Mrs. W. F. Martin, Chicago; James Buchan, Estherville; and Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Elliott, Gladbrook.
