Came to Grundy Co. During the Civil War

Mrs. Mary Starn died at the home of her son, C. E. Starn, on Thursday afternoon. She was 92 years old. She came to Grundy county in 1864. That was a year before the Civil War ended.

Mrs. Starn was a native of the state of Ohio. When she came west with her family 77 years ago they located on a farm in southwest Grundy county and there are very few people now living who were residents of Grundy county at that time. Mr. Starn died 19 years ago.

Funeral services were held in the Methodist church at Whitten last Sunday afternoon. Burial was in the Whitten cemetery.

Mrs. Starn is survived by two sons, E. H. Starn of Texas and C. E. Starn of Whitten and two daughters, Mrs. T. O. Dunham of Marshalltown and Mrs. A. R. Nordquist of Whitten, and 13 grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary Starn, who passed away Thursday noon, March 13, were held Sunday afternoon at the Methodist church in Whitten, in charge of the pastor, Rev. Swanson. Burial was in the Benson Cemetery. Mrs. Starn, who was passed 92 years old, had been in failing health for some time. She was born in Ohio ad came with her family to Grundy county in 1864. Her husband preceded her in death 19 years ago and she has since made her home with her son, Curt. She is also survived by another son in Texas and two daughters, Mrs. A. R. Nordquist of Whitten and Mrs. Fred Dunham of Marshalltown, 13 grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.
