Obituary

Thos. B. Reynolds was born in Cornwall, Eng., May 30, 1813, and died at the residence of his son, Geo. H. Reynolds, in Whitten, Iowa, May 24, 1888. He came to America in 1845 and located in Jo Davies county, Ill., living a greater portion of the time at Elizabeth and East Galena. In 1878 he came to Iowa and since that time had lived in Whitten or the immediate vicinity. He was married in England to Miss Mary E. Sweetman, who died at Elizabeth, Ill., in 1857. A few months previous to the death of his beloved companion, Father Reynolds was converted and united with the M.E. church. He was a firm believer in the Christian religion and found the savior to be very precious to the latest moments of his life. He had been in feeble health for several months. At times his health improved and we were all quite hopeful of his recovery, but during the last two weeks of his illness he gradually declined until the summons came that called him to bid adieu to the loved ones about him. He leaves three sons and two daughters, who with their families mourn very deeply the loss of a kind and loving father. Grandpa Reynolds, as he was usually called, was greatly beloved by all who knew him, both old and young. He was a great lover of flowers and those who knew his delight in them very beautifully decorated both church and casket with a rich profusion of flowers and emblems of mourning. The funeral service took place at the M.E. church in Whitten May 25, 1888, conducted by the pastor, Rev. A. M. Sanford. A large congregation were present, many of whom followed in a long procession to the place of interment near the Vinton school house.
