Whitten Man Area's Second Traffic Fatality...
County Man Fatally Injured In Car Mishap Friday Near Union

A 21-year-old Grundy county man, Gary Berry, of rural Whitten, died Saturday in a Des Moines hospital of injuries received in a two car accident at 11:40 a.m. Friday on a Hardin county blacktop road a mile east of Union.

Berry is Hardin county's first traffic fatality of 1971.

He is the second Grundy county to die on Iowa highways this year.

Berry was a passenger in a car driven by David Clough, 19, of Whitten, which crashed head-on into a second vehicle operated by Pvt. Bruce Ewoldt, 21, also of Whitten.

Berry was immediately rushed to the Des Moines hospital by Union ambulance, where he died later.

Clough, who suffered a fractured leg and multiple bruises, also was transferred to Des Moines in fair condition. He is now reported as satisfactory.

Ewoldt, home on leave before going to Vietnam, received head lacerations and bruises. He was treated and released.

Gary Berry was born December 2, 1949, in Waterloo, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Berry. He lived with his parents in Waterloo until he was 15. He then came to Whitten to live with his uncle, Max Long, on a farm in Felix township.

He was graduated from Union-Whitten Community School in 1968. Pvt. Ewoldt was a graduating classmate, and Clough was graduated from the same school a year later.

Private funeral services for the deceased were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Biersborn Funeral Home in Union, with the Rev. Ray Howland, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Conrad, officiating. Burial was in the Benson cemetery southeast of Whitten.
