Death Of Mrs. J. B. Price

Highly Respected Woman Dies at Her Home at Whitten--Burial Made in Benson Cemetery

The funeral of Mrs. J. B. Price of Whitten was held from the Church of Christ at Whitten Wednesday afternoon of last week.

Hannah Samantha Smith was born at Eldora, Iowa, June 10, 1855, and passed to the higher life from her home in Whitten, Iowa, July 30, 1912, at the age of 57 years, 1 months and 20 days.

When 15 years old she moved to Pawnee county, Nebraska, where she was married to J. B. Price. Since then she has resided at Concordia Kans., Walnut Grove and in Dallas county Missouri, and later came to Whitten, where she remained until her decease.

She was the mother of eleven children, six of whom are still living, Arthur J., Hartsel E., Enos, Stella N., Eddie M., and Mrs. Essie M. Bonner. She also leaves three sisters and four brothers to mourn her departure, Mary P. Snider, California; Mrs. Ella R. Sigly, Colorado; Mrs. J. M. Davis, Missouri; J. A. Smith, California; Andrew J. Smith, Washington; William E. Smith, Idaho, and John I. Smith of Illinois. Mrs. Davis of Kansas City, and all the children of the deceased were present during her last illness.

When 18 years of age the subject of this sketch united with the Church of Christ, and at the time of her death she was a worthy and highly esteemed member of the same church in Whitten.

Funeral services were conducted by her pastor, S. P. Telford, from the Whitten Church of Christ at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon, July 21[sic], 1912, and the remains were then laid to reset in the Benson cemetery.

Thus ends the last chapter in the earth-life of a kindly neighbor, a faithful friend, a devout Christian, and a loving mother. The home which was begun on the prairies of Nebraska nearly 40 years ago has come to an end--the record of its history is closed. Never again can the children assemble in the sacred circle of their childhood home. But like every dark cloud this one has its silver lining. The bereaved one need not "sorrow as those who have no hope." They can look forward to a happy reunion when all the battles of life are fought and the victory won.

--Hardin County Ledger (Eldora, Iowa), 8 August 1912, pg 1
