Mrs. Christ Flater Died Sunday After A Long Illness

Mrs. Christian Flater died at her home six miles north of Grundy Center last Sunday following an illness which covered a period of several months. She was 82 years and 27 days old.

Mrs. Flater had been a resident of Grundy county for 53 years and during all of that time she lived on one farm.

Funeral services were held at the Salem Lutheran church of Beaver township Wednesday. The services were conducted by the local pastor, Rev. Wm. Paulsen, and there was a very large attendance. Burial was by the side of her husband in the Beaver cemetery.

Obituary
The following obituary was read by the pastor at the church service:
Justina Wilhemina Steinmeyer was born at Vahlbruch, Hanover, Germany, April 29, 1853. Soon after her birth she was baptized in the name of the Triune God. She came to America with her parents when but 2 years old. The family settled in Mt. Morris, Ill., where she was confirmed on May 30, 1868, in the Lutheran church.

On January 16, 1872, she was married to Christian Flater. After living in Illinois for ten years, they moved to Iowa in 1882 and settled on a farm 6 miles north of Grundy Center. Here she resided for 53 years.

On May 29, 1903, her husband died, leaving the widow with 9 children. But she, trusting in the Lord, sustained herself and the children by hard labor, toiling from morning to night until success was hers. It was a great pleasure and reward for her, that she was loved by all her children and children's children. One of her children died when only 10 days old, and another, Mrs. Harm Buskohl, died in 1921.

Mrs. Flater leaves to mourn her death five sons and three daughters: Martin in Minnesota; Henry, August, Christian and John, all living adjacent to the old home; Mrs. Ferdinand Henze and Mrs. Tom Freese at Fern; Mrs. Louis Gerloff, near Holland. There are 35 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. Two sisters also are living: Mrs. John Rabenburg, Grundy Center, and Mrs. Christ Franken, of near Holland.
