John E. Smith, 72, Former Resident, Dies at Oelwein

Cedar Falls--John E. Smith, 72, former resident of Cedar Falls, died Tuesday in an Oelwein convalescent home following a long illness. Cause of death was a chest tumor.

He was born on March 27, 1868, at Colfax, Ia., son of Barney and Maria Smith. He grew to young manhood here and learned the harness making trade in Hudson. He later owned and operated a shop in Reinbeck for a number of years, and then moved to Des Moines.

About 45 years ago he was married to Emma Ross, Davenport, and she preceded him in death some 40 years ago.

Surviving are one sister, Anna R. Smith, Des Moines; and five brothers, Bernard, Leugoria, Hugh and Phineas, all of Cedar Falls, and James, Rockford, Ill. He was preceded in death by one sister, Mrs. S. L. Lowden, Chester, Ia.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 9 a.m. from St. Patrick's Catholic church here, with Rev. Fr. S. J. Mauer officiating. Rev. Mr. Mauer will lead the rosary Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., at Dahl's funeral home.

Burial will be in the Reinbeck cemetery. Brothers and nephews will be casket bearers.
