Rob't Hamilton Dies At Home

Well Known in Masonic Circle--Burial Tues.

At his home in Lakota early Sunday morning Robert Hamilton passed peacefully away, following several months of illness. He was a little past seventy-three years and six months of age.

He was known and beloved by a great many in Emmet county, where he had spent several years while managing the Wells estate in the eastern part of this county.

His character was above criticism and his kindly spirit won for him many friends who will revere his memory. He was a man of exceptional ability and keen insight into business affairs, and by hard work, and strict attention to all details he accumulated a substantial but modest fortune. He was endeared to his friends and to them he was known as "Bob," open hearted and generous "Bob."

He loved Masonry and never missed an opportunity of attending the meetings within reach. He was a member of the Blue lodge at Buffalo Center, Jeptha Chapter and Commandery of Estherville, the Consistory at Davenport and the Shrine Temple of Cedar Rapids. He was in good standing in all of these Masonic bodies.

He had a cottage at Templar Park on Spirit lake and for many years was an annual visitor there with his family. His last visit was last fall when he and his son Robert were there to close the cottage for the winter. Ill health prevented him taking part in the Knights Templar activities, but he loved the atmosphere and the associates.

Besides a devoted wife and son, Robert, a sister and a brother in Philadelphia are left to mourn his death.

The funeral was held from the Congregational church in Lakota Tuesday afternoon, in charge of the Masonic lodge of Buffalo Center with a Knight Templar escort from Esdraelon Commandery of Estherville, consisting of Wallace Berg, H. C. Brees, M. J. Groves, J. Hanson, J. S. Hilliard and Geo. A. Nichols. There were many at the funeral to pay their last tribute of love and respect to their neighbor and friend.

Interment was made in Oak Hill cemetery, Estherville, where the impressive Masonic service was given by Mr. Woodcock of the Buffalo Center lodge.

The floral offerings were many and beautiful.

Robert Hamilton was born near Londonderry, Ireland, September 16, 1959. When nineteen years of age he came to America and remained in Washington, D.C., with a sister for a year. He then came west and located in Wellsburg, Iowa, where he was given a position with Geo. Wells, a very extensive land owner. Later he was sent to Emmet county as manager of the Wells land holdings here. He resided in this and Kossuth counties for nearly thirty-four years. Dec. 5, 1915 he was united in marriage to Miss Maud Youngman of Maple Hill. To this union a son was born, who in time will carry on where his father left off.

Obituary Of Robert Hamilton

Genial and Well Known Lakota Man Died Last Week

One Of Germania's First Citizens

Came to America from Ireland When A Young Man. Leaves Wife and Son.

Mention was made last week of the death of Robert Hamilton, Sr., of Lakota, one of the best known men of Kossuth county. The Record gives the following obituary:

Robert Hamilton was born September 16, 1859, at St. Johnston, six miles from Londonderry, Ireland. He came to the United States in 1878 at the age of nineteen years. He made his home the first years with his sister in Washington, D.C., coming west in 1879. Soon after his arrival he began working for George Wells who owned thousands of acres of land and many cattle in northern Iowa. Later he became overseer and continued in the employ of Mr. Wells for about thirty-two years. After that Mr. Hamilton made his home in Germania, now Lakota, procuring and improving the property which is still the home of his family.

In 1889 he returned to Ireland to visit his mother who was failing in health and passed away soon after his return to America. His father died when Robert was very young.

He was united in marriage with Maude Youngman of Estherville at her home December 5, 1915. They have lived here ever since. Their son, Robert, Jr., was born September 15, 1917.

They united with the Presbyterian church of Germania by letter in 1916. Mr. Hamilton's letter was sent here from his old home church in Ireland.

Mr. Hamilton joined the Masonic lodge about fifty years ago at Steamboat Rock, first the Blue lodge, then the Royal Arch, Commandery, Consistory and Shrine, remaining in good standing until his death.

He leaves to mourn his passing his widow, his only son, Robert, and one brother and one sister in Philadelphia. Two brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. He was a good husband and father, always looking after the interests of his family, and a good citizen, ready to do all he could for his town and willing to help those in need. Many friends and acquaintances will miss him wherever he was known.
