Charles Kitzman Services Held

H. Charles Kitzman, 72, of Conrad, died Sunday, June 5, at Covenant Medical Center from complications of cancer.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, June 8, at 10:30 a.m. at Second Christian Reformed Church, Wellsburg, with Rev. Doug Holmes and Rev. Thomas Vos officiating. Burial followed in Vienna Cemetery, Beaman.

Pallbearers were Brett Kitzman, Scott Kitzman, Tony Ladehoff, Brian Ladehoff, Jonathan Kenney, Jamie Kenney and Nicholas Kitzman.

Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.

Charles was born April 6, 1922, the son of Henry C. and Olga M. Rohwer Kitzman in Beaman. He graduated from Beaman High School in 1940.

On September 1, 1944, he was united in marriage to Harriet D. Wulf in Wellsburg. Charles and Harriet lived on a farm near Beaman after their marriage. After a few months they moved to Holland, Michigan, while there Charles worked making war supplies.

They moved back to the Wellsburg and Holland areas where Charles farmed. Later on he was employed in Wellsburg at the Hardware Store. He worked for Iowa Radiant Heat and later operated Wellsburg Electric and Appliance store for a short time. He was a hard worker and took great pride in his work making sure everything was operating properly before the job was considered done.

In 1960, they moved to the Beaman area to farm. In later years Charles also operated Kitzman Sales & Service dealing with grain dryers and grain bin construction.

Charles was a long time member of the Second Christian Reformed Church, Wellsburg.

Charles liked to hunt and fish. He enjoyed the out of doors and all of nature. He had a great appreciation for trees and planted many in his lifetime. For many years Charles' hobby was raising exotic animals at his rural Conrad home. His pride and joy was his bear "Ben."

He was preceded in death by his wife, Harriet on September 25, 1993, and his parents.

Survivors include 3 daughters, Elaine Kenney and Nancy Ladehoff, both of Grand Rapids, Michigan and Heidi Strang of Portland, Michigan; 3 sons, Clifford Kitzman of Beaman, Wallace Kitzman of Conrad and William Kitzman of Beaman; 11 grandchildren; 4 sisters, Lorraine Hertema of Conrad, Venita Kitzman of Beaman, Mary Jean Clemens of Eldora and Marjorie Dickinson of Ottumwa; and 1 brother, John Kitzman of Apache Junction, Arizona.

The Johnston Funeral Home, Conrad, was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
